Winter can be a great time to build your deck, but that doesn’t mean the season doesn’t come with its limitations. The harsh temperatures and weather of winter can make building your deck a bit of a problem. As a professional Maryland deck contractor, we’ve built many decks in all seasons, including winter. We wanted to take a little time today to talk about building a Maryland deck in wintertime.
Winter is ‘Slow Season’ for Deck Contractors
One good reason to build your deck during the winter is that the season tends to be a slower time of year for most Maryland deck contractors. Since this is the slower time of year, you’ll have your contractors complete attention, and you may even be able to negotiate a lower rate. This isn’t the only good reason to build your deck during the winter, but it may be the best reason.
Severe Weather Can Cause Problems
Living in Maryland, we all know how harsh our winters can get, but the weather can be more than just a nuisance when it comes to building your deck. Snow and ice storms can completely shut down work and can push your construction schedule back extensively. You should consult with your Maryland decking contractor to plan around the forecast.
Problems With Frozen Ground
Part of the deck building process requires digging into the ground below the frost line. The frost line for most of Maryland is around 30 inches, and while digging through 30 inches of frozen ground is very difficult, the ground rarely freezes that deep. Usually, the temperature fluctuates during the winter enough to allow the ground to stay warm above the frost line except for the very top layer, although during severe winters this may not be true.
