If you are considering adding a patio to your home you likely have a lot of questions about how a patio is built, how much it will cost, how long it will take, etc. Adding a patio can be simple or complicated, depending on your yard and on the design of the patio.

How are Patio Installations Done?

A reliable contractor will follow several steps when installing a patio properly. Let’s look at some of the steps that are taken when installing a patio.

Land Prep

First the patio contractor will prepare the land for the patio pavers. Land will be marked with the shape and size of the patio, and then cleared of grass or other ground covering. The land will also be leveled off, with a slight slope for drainage.

After the ground is prepared for the patio a weed barrier is laid down to prevent weeds from making their way through the pavers and onto the patio. The weed barrier can be made of black weed barrier, gravel, sand, or a combination of two or more of those things. The gravel and/or sand also creates a smooth surface for laying the pavers.

Laying the Patio

Once a base has been established the pavers will be laid for the patio. This step can be fairly simple, or very complex, depending on the complexity of your patio design. Bricks can be laid in complex patterns or larger pavers can be laid in less complex patterns, depending on your preference.

Once the pavers have been laid, the patio is filled in with sand to further prevent weeds from growing up from underneath, and to fill in any gaps.

Adding Extras

If you decide to add extras to your patio design, such as a built-in fireplace or fire pit, that will be additional work for your contractor. Firepits are added once the patio has been built, but if they impact the design of the pavers that will be taken into consideration.

In addition to a fire pit or fireplace, things like outdoor kitchens and retaining walls and seating can be added to your patio design. All of these things will have an impact on the installation process, as well as the overall budget for the patio.
