A pergola is an outdoor structure that has columns that support a grid-like roofing system. The roof is usually left open aside from the grid beams. A gazebo, on the other hand, is a hexagonal or octagonal-shaped structure that has a closed roof and open sides. While these two structures are similar, they have some key differences. Check out some of these key differences to see which one might be best for you.

Purpose

Homeowners usually build a pergola to define a space on the exterior of their homes. Since these structures don’t offer protection from the wind or rain, pergolas are built as decorative pieces that offer some shade from the sun. Sometimes they are used to connect two buildings or to define a walkway.

Gazebos are used for gatherings. Their closed roofs make it the perfect place to set up chairs and entertain. It’s not uncommon for homeowners to use these structures as a place of relaxation or as a place to chat with friends and family.

Cost

Several factors will affect the cost of building either one of these structures. However, it’s safe to say that, on average, pergolas will be less expensive to build. This is because pergolas are a lot simpler to build than gazebos. Expect to pay anything from $3,000 to $6,000 for a 9-for pergola. For a gazebo, you can expect to pay between $5,000 and $10,000 for a 9-foot gazebo.

Installation

In order to install a gazebo, an Annapolis, MD gazebo builder will first need to define a space on the exterior of the property. Afterward, they will need to build a raised structure to keep the gazebo off the ground, erect walls, and top the structure with a roof. The end product will be a round structure that protects users from the rain.

In contrast, pergolas are a lot simpler to build. To install a pergola, four poles will need to be inserted into the ground along with cross beams and rafters connecting them on the top. Sometimes pergolas can be built by DIY homeowners, but it’s always recommended to let the professionals build it for you.
