Some home improvement projects require special conditions to perform. Painting the exterior of your home, for example, cannot be done when it’s raining or exceptionally humid outside. However, when it comes to decks, the possibilities are endless. Deck construction can occur during any time of the year. What may surprise you is that the winter time can actually be a great time to break ground on your new deck. Let’s take a look at why.

So, What is the Best Time to Build a Deck?

One of the best times to build a deck in your backyard is in the winter, as we mentioned, but every season has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, one of the good things about building in the winter is that the process will be complete just in time to enjoy your new deck in Spring. However, one of the benefits of building your deck in Spring, on the other hand, is that you’ll be able to enjoy your deck throughout the entire year, which is nice.

The absolute best time to build is in the winter though and there are a few reasons as to why this is. The first reason is that you will be one of the only people to make the call. Most homeowners might not even know that you can build a deck in the winter, much less that you should.

Another reason to build a deck in the winter is because the cold, hard ground is better for digging. The low humidity in the air is also good for the lumber that we’ll be using during construction. A low humidity will allow the deck’s foundation to settle a little bit better.

The Problem with Building in the Winter

The only real problem that can arise during the winter months is snow. Snow and ice can certainly delay the deck construction process, but if you jump on it early enough in the season then you should be fine. Once we get into January and February, snow becomes a much stronger threat. However, keep in mind that winter tends to be a slower season for most contractors. That means we will be able to dedicate more attention to your project than if we were to take it on in the Spring or other more popular seasons.
