The first step in obtaining a deck that you and your family love is finding a reputable deck builder. But how do you know if you’re hiring a reputable builder? You find out by asking these questions:
How Much Experience Do You Have?
Part of being a reputable builder is having experience. You’ll want a builder that has years of experience since they’ll be able to get the job done right and overcome obstacles along the way. An experienced builder guarantees that your deck will turn out the way you want it to at the end.
What’s Your Specialty?
This question will help you determine which deck builder is right for your specific project. If you have a particular decking material or design in mind, you may be able to find a builder that specializes in that particular area. Even if a deck builder doesn’t specialize in a particular area, find out if they have experience doing the type of deck that you want.
Do You Have Staff or Subcontract?
Some deck builders hire other companies to do all or parts of the job. While that may mean you have highly specialized trade people working on your decking project, it can also mean a lack of communication. Deck builders with their own staff usually have fewer communication issues than builders who use subcontractors since they are familiar with the skills of their staff, and have more direct control of every aspect of the job.
What’s Your Warranty?
Most reputable deck builders offer a quality warranty plan. That’s because they know that a deck is an investment, and they want to ensure that your investment is protected. Deck builders who stand behind their work will offer a comprehensive warranty. So before you hire a deck builder, be sure to ask about the specifics of their warranty, such as what’s covered and how long the warranty lasts.
Are You Licensed and Insured?
Any deck builder you hire should be licensed and insured. If you ask this question and you don’t get a clear “yes”, it’s probably best to look for a different builder. Your deck builder should be able to produce an insurance certificate, business license, and a Work Safe BC credential at any given time.
